213 years ago .😮 Long before we were born...A tragic incident happened. 😳
A full cargo of Igbo slaves who were brought to America decided to deliberately commit suicide rather than become slaves in a foreign land.😞😞
These poor slaves were being transferred from a plantation(where there worked as planters)— to St.Simon island(where they will be used for forced labour). The cost of the slave transfer transaction was $100 per head.😱
They were being transported with a Ship named " The Schooner York" — and were locked up in the deck; chained and suppressed , with Fiece looking watchmen to look after them.😒😒
During the Voyage, 😣 These Brave slaves arose and revolted.😣😤 They rebelled against their captors and took over the ship.🙌🙌
Then Suddenly ,Instead of taking solace in the shore... They proceeded into the creek (Dunbar Creek) in unison singing in Igbo language.😪😪
"“🌊🌊Orimiri buru anyi bia. 🚸🚶
🌊🌊Orimiri ka anyi ga ejina.”🚸🚶
Translation:
"🌊🌊The Water Spirit brought us.🚶🚸
🌊🌊 The Water Spirit will carry us home."🚸🚶
And as their steps got deeper, 😮they gradually drowned themselves, in turns,in the creek. 😰😰
Accepting their painful fate, Choosing Death over Slavery.
😔😔😔😔😔
Ladies and Gentlemen😐😐 : This is the story of the #IgboLanding that took place in 1803.👆👆 It is indeed a tragic and painful story.
It is no Myth, It is a true Story. 👊👊
And it Symbolizes Spirituality and Fearlessness ;💪 Bravery and Unity.💙
#Nigerians need to be reminded of what our Ancestors stood for and what they went through to bring us thus far, So that we don't sell our privilege to fear and anxiety.👣
How does it apply to our daily lives ? — It reminds us that no matter what, we have a common struggle, irrespective of our diversity. 😔But, Life demands that we be brave enough to be our own heroes!💪💪
